When Stan's quasi-girlfriend Mary (Kirsten Dunst) comes to see him, Patrick decides to leave and spend time with his own new squeeze, Clementine-yes, the same one he fell for while erasing her mind a few days ago, wooing with lines stolen from Joel's lost memories ever since. The dispersed, vaguely teenage technicians responsible for the operation are Stan (Mark Ruffalo, endearing in Clark Kent glasses and messy pompadour) and Patrick (Elijah Wood, looking all of 14). But even as the film discusses the two-year love affair, it also recounts one-night events-the night Joel lies in bed while Lacuna's memory thieves pillage his brain. Unlike Kaufman's previous work, Eternal Sunshine aims not to surprise us with the originality of his gimmicks, but to wound us with the earnest familiarity of his feeling.Īt least that's the case when it comes to the film's handling of Joel's relationship with Clementine. There are no unforeseen twists or abrupt surprises between Joel and Clementine, only a wistful reverse view of love's decline. But Kaufman and Gondry use it to a different end, finding not secret truths but forgotten feelings. The story-told-in-reverse is a popular enough device typically used to mask audience knowledge. He watches helplessly as, one by one, each memory is irretrievably lost-titles fade from book covers, passersby disappear, and then Clementine vanishes too, only to reappear in another doomed memory, all the way back to their very first encounter, at a beach party in Montauk. He frenziedly tries to find an obscure corner of his mind where he can hide any scrap from searching and destroying mission by the technicians, but they still find him. But as the process goes back to moments of tenderness and joy, Joel rediscovers his passion for Clementine and knows after all that he doesn't want to miss these memories.

With Spotless Mind's Everlasting Sunlight, writer Charlie Kaufman and director Michel Gondry created a film whose whole intention is to blur and fade, a self-erasing homage to memory and love fragility.
Murnau in Vampire's Shadow explained, "We are scientists engaged in the creation of memory, but our memory will neither blur nor fade." So it's hardly shocking that cinema has always been portrayed as a synthetic memory. By comparison, our personal memories are mainly visual and auditory, not unlike a film in the mind's eye.
Yes, often a scent can trigger an emphatic, unmediated memory, but it's usually an imprecise one-a general duration in one's life rather than a specific moment.
